Helmet Photobiomodulation

Helmet photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive light-based approach offered within our cognitive health care at OWM Integrative Wellness. A helmet worn over the head delivers selected light wavelengths to the scalp, with the aim of influencing cellular processes associated with brain function.

Also called transcranial photobiomodulation, this approach is being studied for its effects on cellular energy metabolism, cerebral circulation, and cognitive performance. We consider its role individually, alongside your symptoms, medical history, and broader care plan.

How Helmet Photobiomodulation Works

Light & Cellular Energy
Human cells contain light-absorbing molecules called chromophores. Research into PBM examines how red and near-infrared light interacts with these molecules, including those associated with mitochondrial function.

Mitochondria produce ATP, the energy used to support cellular activity. Changes in mitochondrial signaling and energy metabolism are among the proposed mechanisms underlying photobiomodulation.

Transcranial Light Delivery
The helmet applies light externally, allowing a portion of the delivered energy to penetrate the scalp and skull. The amount reaching underlying tissues depends on the wavelength, device settings, and individual anatomy.

Circulation & Inflammatory Signaling
Researchers are investigating effects on blood flow, oxidative stress, and inflammatory pathways, as well as possible changes in attention and memory. These mechanisms remain areas of study rather than assured outcomes from an individual session.

How We Integrate Helmet PBM

Alongside Brain-Focused Infusions
Our protocols may incorporate helmet PBM during selected infusion appointments, including Brain Fit IV or IV NAD+. Cerebrolysin may also be discussed within certain protocols, with separate consideration of its evidence and regulatory status, as it is not FDA-approved in the United States.

We assess the light treatment and infusion independently. Combining them does not establish that the helmet activates infused nutrients or amplifies their cognitive effects.

Within Optimal Life
Helmet PBM is included within the cognitive wellness offerings of our Optimal Life Annual Membership. Its use is considered alongside nutrition, sleep, movement, stress management, and appropriate cognitive assessment, with follow-up guided by your needs and response.

Within Our Broader Light Therapy Services
Our photobiomodulation offerings also include intravenous fiberoptic light delivery and interstitial tissue applications. These use different delivery methods and require their own clinical assessment; evidence for one application does not automatically establish benefits for another.

The Treatment Experience

Before treatment, we review your health history, medications, and goals, then explain the proposed protocol and relevant precautions. Our team positions the helmet while you sit comfortably and monitors your tolerance throughout the session.

Helmet PBM itself requires no injection or incision. When paired with an infusion, the IV preparation and monitoring are managed separately by our clinical team.

Expectations & Follow-Up

Early studies suggest potential cognitive benefits, although findings vary across devices, treatment schedules, and patient groups. Helmet PBM has not been established as a way to prevent dementia or preserve long-term memory.

We consider changes in symptoms and daily function during follow-up, using cognitive assessments when appropriate. Persistent or progressive cognitive concerns also warrant medical evaluation to identify possible underlying causes.
