Prolozone Injections

Prolozone therapy combines an ozone-based injection with selected solutions used in prolotherapy and supportive tissue care. At OWM Integrative Wellness, it may be considered for joint pain and certain concerns affecting tendons, ligaments, or surrounding soft tissues.

Care begins with understanding the structures involved in your discomfort and how they influence movement. Your treatment plan reflects your diagnosis, previous care, and the activities you would like to return to.

Understanding Prolozone

The treatment components
Medical ozone is a form of oxygen containing three oxygen atoms rather than two. In Prolozone therapy, an oxygen–ozone preparation is used alongside selected injectable solutions, which may include dextrose and other ingredients according to the prescribed protocol.

Your provider will explain the composition of your treatment and the purpose of each component before proceeding.

The intended response
Ozone-based injections are being studied for their effects on local biological signaling, inflammation, and pain. Prolotherapy introduces a separate stimulus intended to influence the body’s repair response.

These proposed mechanisms do not establish that treatment restores cartilage, repairs torn tissue, or permanently stabilizes a joint. The clinical aim is to assess whether this approach can help improve comfort and function in an appropriate patient.

How it differs from other injections
Dextrose prolotherapy uses a prepared solution without ozone, while platelet-rich plasma therapy uses concentrated platelets from your own blood. Prolozone incorporates an oxygen–ozone preparation into the treatment approach. Your provider considers these options according to the affected tissues and your individual needs.

The OWM Approach

Assessment of the affected area
Your evaluation considers the painful joint or tissue alongside the structures that support its movement. Examination and relevant imaging help identify potential contributors to discomfort and guide treatment recommendations.

Areas assessed at OWM may include:

  • Joints affected by osteoarthritis
  • Selected back, neck, and sacroiliac concerns
  • Tendon and ligament conditions
  • Jaw discomfort associated with temporomandibular joint disorders

The suitability of Prolozone varies by diagnosis, and evidence from one treatment area cannot automatically be applied to another.

Ultrasound-guided placement
OWM administers Prolozone injections under ultrasound guidance to visualize the intended treatment area and guide needle placement. This supports a targeted approach to the joint capsule or surrounding tissues identified during your assessment.

Coordinated recovery
Treatment may be incorporated into a broader plan that includes rehabilitation, strength work, and activity adjustments. Follow-up focuses on changes in pain, movement, and everyday function.

The Experience

Before treatment, your provider reviews the proposed injection sites, potential risks, and aftercare. The number of injections and appointments depends on the area being treated and your response.

Temporary soreness, swelling, or bruising may occur afterward. Your team provides guidance on activity and explains which symptoms require medical attention.

Some clinical studies have reported improvements in pain and function following ozone injections for knee osteoarthritis, although the evidence for combined Prolozone protocols and other applications remains limited. Your consultation includes a discussion of these limitations alongside potential risks, including infection, bleeding, and injury to nearby tissues.
