What is Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine therapy is one of the integrative medicine treatments available at OWM Integrative Wellness aimed at enhancing health. well-being, and alleviating symptoms of anxiety, depression and PTSD. Although Ketamine has been used extensively for decades as a general anesthetic during surgical procedures because of its pain-reducing and sedative effects, ketamine has more recently been shown to be an effective intervention for anxiety, depression and PTSD through selective blockade of NMDA receptors. All mood disorders are modulated through special NMDA receptors. These receptors are responsible for conduction of stress enhancing chemicals that often keep the brain in a Fight Or Fight mode. The brain does not repair and eliminate inflammation when in this mode. Once NMDA receptors are blocked, the brain can start mending old nerve connections and forming new ones. These changes carry a wide spectrum of benefits both for clients looking for illness prevention and those suffering from a mood disorder.

Conditions ketamine therapy benefits:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Chronic pain
  • Substance and alcohol addiction
  • Stress

If you suffer from any of these conditions and traditional treatments fail to ease your symptoms, you may be a candidate for IV ketamine therapy.

The Experience

After a consultation, the OWM Integrative Wellness team determines if you’re a candidate for ketamine therapy.

How Are We Different?

It’s all about set and setting!

Our Ketamine service is unlike any other in the area. We take the time to get to know our clients before the initiation of therapy.

Clients work on their intention setting with a trained KAP( ketamine assisted psychotherapist) before begining treatments.

The treatments are conducted in a specifically designed room whose colors are conducive with an optimal setting for the therapeutic journey.

Virtual Reality Goggles are used to increase brain responsiveness to the treatment. Several infusions are given before Ketamine to improve the brain’s ability to take advantage of Ketamine’s healing properties.

Music and dosing of Ketamine are adjusted based on the individual’s assessment.

The Power of Music

Music and its myriad of therapeutic benefits have been used extensively with psychedelic-assisted therapy to enhance and guide an individual through a therapeutic session.

When administering Ketamine therapy at OWM, we now use Wavepaths, a synthesizing software to select a much more personalized music experience; the one that matches your goals and your intention. Each music therapy session is accurately designed during psychotherapy preparation and integration sessions with our psychotherapists for subsequent ketamine sessions.

What to Know Before You Go:

Ketamine therapy is safe and effective for a variety of mood disorders that have not responded to typical standard of care treatments such as psychotherapy and antidepressant medications.

Intravenous Ketamine is considered to be the most effective mode of administration, due to consistent blood levels during the therapy and therapist’s ability to control it’s adminsitration throughout the entire treatment session.

OWM’s attention to set and setting around Ketamine treatment for each client, increases it’s effectiveness and duration of benefit.

Safety

Before each Ketamine treatment, Dr. Kaplan personally performs an evaluation, including a comprehensive medical examination and basic blood work. Once cleared, a client meets with one of OWM’s partner psychotherapists for a preparatory session to understand the individual’s goals and intentions before performing a treatment and ensure that the individual is properly prepared for the experience.

A minimum of two integration sessions are recommended after completing the series of infusions to maximize results.

Every client is screened by a psychotherapist before administration to ensure that the individual is properly prepared for the experience. Dr. Kaplan sits with each client during their initial session. A trained nurse sits in for each remaining session.
