What Is Microneedling, and Why Is Everyone Raving About it?

Apr 1, 2023

You can’t stop time, but you can control your skin’s response to it by tapping into your body’s healing powers. Read on to learn how microneedling coaxes your skin to repair itself.

Microneedling, one of the most popular anti-aging treatments, is a top service in aesthetics and dermatology. The growing demand drove the microneedling market to $217.2 million in 2020 and is expected to keep increasing to $500 million by 2031.

Does microneedling live up to its hype?

Yes! As part of our commitment to naturopathic, holistic, and functional medicine, our OWM Integrative Wellness team, located in Buffalo, New York, stands behind microneedling’s natural approach to achieving smoother, tighter, and younger-looking skin.

Leonard Kaplan, DO, and Kim Howes, ND, have strict standards when it comes to the products and treatments we offer. Our Spa by OWM focuses on skin and body rejuvenation that enhances your natural beauty by helping you minimize the effects of aging.

Microneedling meets and exceeds our criteria, and our clients love the results — here’s why.

What happens to your skin as you age?

We don’t have to tell you that older skin has more wrinkles, but do you know why? Why doesn’t your skin stay silky smooth, stretchable, and plump all your life? It’s because several forces constantly work against your skin’s defenses.

When you’re young, those defenses are strong and resilient, and they win the war against gravity, sun exposure, harsh winds, and aggressive scrubbing. Over time, though, those defenses, like the subcutaneous fat and the collagen and elastin proteins in the deeper layers of your skin, dwindle.

You lose about 1% of your collagen supply every year starting in your 20s. You may not notice it until your 30s or 40s, but one day, you’ll look in the mirror and see tiny lines forming around your eyes and mouth. As the years pass, the problem grows: Less fat, collagen, and elastin translate to more wrinkles and sagging and thinner skin.

Plus, all the time you’ve spent in the sun exacerbates your skin’s breakdown. The ultraviolet rays damage your skin cells deep within, causing clumps of melanin to create spots and dark patches and making your skin appear dry and crepey.

Poor sleep quality, smoking, junk food, stress, and genetics also affect how quickly your skin shows signs of aging. So, what can you do?

Meet microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that helps your body restore its collagen and elastin supplies, repairing your skin from the inside, so the outside regains its youthful texture and appearance.

Microneedling creates countless tiny pricks in your skin that summon your body’s healing response. These controlled wounds trigger a flood of new collagen and elastin to the area, restoring your skin’s health without medication or chemicals.

Does this sound painful? Don’t worry — it’s not. We use two revolutionary microneedling systems, DermaFrac C™ microneedling system and SkinPen. Our DermaFrac C™ is used for rejuvenation and anti-aging of skin that needs minor to moderate repair. It utilizes special technology, which gently pulls your skin toward the tiny needles rather than forcing them into your skin, making a significant difference in your comfort during treatment. Our SkinPen device uses the most advanced microneedling technology on the market designed to penetrate deeper, and is ideal for skin that is in need of more advanced correction of scars and deep wrinkles without pain or bruising.

Microneedling with PRP — Even better

The Spa at OWM combines your microneedling collagen-induction therapy with all-natural platelet-rich plasma (PRP). To create this powerful serum, we take a blood sample from your arm and spin it at high speed in a centrifuge to separate your blood into its individual components. Then, we extract only the liquid plasma and the platelets, which do amazing things when we add them to your microneedling treatment.

PRP is an effective form of regenerative medicine. In fact, orthopedic surgeons use it often to accelerate soft-tissue healing. Once injected into a torn ligament or joint, the platelets release growth factors that speed up tissue revitalization — and the same happens when we introduce it into your micro wounds during microneedling.

Microneedling with PRP is becoming increasingly popular, but not all treatments work the same. Most practices apply the PRP to your skin and hope the needles push the serum down through the perforations they create. The DermaFrac C system ensures deep penetration by injecting the PRP directly through the needle tips, wasting nothing.

Since microneedling with PRP stimulates your body’s natural healing mechanisms, it takes time for results to appear. You notice plumper, smoother, and fresher skin about 3-4 weeks after your treatment. For the best results, we recommend three treatments spaced about a month apart.

Don’t Forget the Skin Microbiome!

The concept of a healthy gut microbiome is now widely understood as a significant driver of our health, but until recently we didn’t know that skin has a microbiome that is just as significant for the health and youthfulness of our skin. OWM now provides a revolutionary new skin probiotic called Biojuve Biome Support Complex, which works on improving the health of our clients skin before and after microneedling treatments. Try microneedling with PRP for yourself and find out why everyone’s raving about it. Schedule your first session by calling OWM Integrative Wellness or booking online.
