What You Should Know About SonoCine’s Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound

Mar 26, 2023

Founder of OWM Integrative Wellness, Dr. Leonard Kaplan will present a free lecture on a cutting-edge technology in early breast cancer detection on April 12th from 6-7 PM at the Trocaire Achievement Center (behind Russell’s Steakhouse) at 6681 Transit Road in Williamsville. The technology is called SonoCiné automated whole breast ultrasound and it differs from conventional breast ultrasound in that it uses an advanced robotic process to scan breast tissue with accuracy and precision – eliminating potential human error. It can scan all breast tissue – including the axilla, sternum and under-breast region which are hard to access during a mammogram.

Approved by the FDA in 2011, this technology has proven to detect the undetectable earliest stages of breast cancer, as small as 3mm, even in women with dense breast tissue. This exam is not meant to replace a traditional mammogram but is recommended as an adjunct breast cancer screening exam to increase the likelihood of detecting breast cancer early when it is most easily treated.

Why is this important? If you have dense breast tissue, you have likely required more than just a mammogram because your fibrous and glandular tissue appears white on a mammogram, which can hide many types of suspicious findings that also appear white. This makes traditional breast cancer screening with mammography alone more challenging and increases the risk of cancer going undetected for women with dense breast tissue. That is why women with dense breast tissue often must supplement their mammogram with additional mammograms that increase exposure to radiation, conventional breast ultrasound, or breast MRI, which involves a contrast agent.

The good news is that the innovative SonoCiné automated whole breast ultrasound technology is closing the gap and providing ALL women with reassurance that no cancer is going undetected.  Whether you have dense breast tissue, a personal or family history of breast cancer, or breast implants, this technology will provide the peace of mind you need.

In clinical trials, SonoCiné was able to detect more cancers than mammography and was more accurate in detecting smaller cancers than traditional mammography screening alone. This is strong evidence to support the argument that adding SonoCiné to a yearly mammogram screening can improve cancer detection and potentially save lives.
